About Utah

Utah, located in the Western United States, is renowned for its striking diversity in natural beauty, ranging from arid deserts with dunes to thriving pine forests in mountain valleys. It covers approximately 84,899 square miles, making it the 13th largest state by area in the United States. Utah is enclosed by Idaho and Wyoming to the north, Colorado to the east, Arizona to the south, and Nevada to the west.
Utah is home to five national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands) known as the “Mighty 5”, several national monuments, and numerous state parks that feature striking sandstone formations, rugged mountains, and serene bodies of water. The Great Salt Lake, located in the northern part of the state, is one of the largest saltwater lakes in the world and a significant feature of Utah’s geography.
The state’s capital and largest city, Salt Lake City, is recognized worldwide as the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though less than half of the state’s residents are members of the Church. The city was also the host of the 2002 Winter Olympics and remains a hub for winter sports due to its proximity to renowned ski resorts such as Park City and Snowbird.
Utah’s cuisine is as diverse as its landscape, from dishes influenced by the state’s Mormon heritage, like Funeral Potatoes (a casserole dish that features potatoes, cheese, onions, cream soup, and a crunchy top) and Jell-O salad, to the state’s version of scones which are deep-fried dough with honey butter. Utah is also known for its vibrant food truck scene, particularly in the urban areas around Salt Lake City. Additionally, the state has a burgeoning craft beer industry, despite its historical regulations around alcohol due to its religious influences.
Utah has a rich sports legacy. The Utah Jazz, based in Salt Lake City, is the state’s professional NBA team and has a passionate following. Collegiate sports are also prominent in Utah, with significant rivalries between Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. Utah’s high altitude and cold winters make it a popular location for winter sports, evidenced by the state hosting the Winter Olympics in 2002
Utah is a state that blends natural beauty, diverse culinary offerings, and a robust sports history to create its distinct identity. From the picturesque landscapes of the “Mighty 5” national parks to its unique cuisine and passionate sports culture, Utah offers an intriguing mix of experiences for both residents and visitors.
