Objectives

  • Gain a better understanding of bone metabolism and bone remodeling in children.
  • Learn about pediatric and secondary osteoporosis in children with rheumatic disease.
  • Recognize what roles inflammation, pubertal delay, and lack of physical activity, play in pediatric osteoporosis.
  • Understand how calcium, vitamin D, and physical activity and muscle training can help children with pediatric osteoporosis.

Course Description

Learn about bone metabolism and bone remodeling in children and how genetic factors significantly affect bone health, through their influence on bone cell function,  cartilage quality, calcium and vitamin D homeostasis, sex hormone metabolism and pubertal timing.  You will also learn about pediatric and secondary osteoporosis in children with rheumatic disease. The course will also help you gain a better understanding of how inflammation, pubertal delay, lack of physical activity, malabsorption and nutritional deficiency, including inadequate daily calcium and vitamin D play a role in pediatric osteoporosis.
